RomComs

After researching numerous romantic comedies, we decided that we really liked the style of indie rom-coms, from the creative narratives to the original characters.
Indie rom coms like to challenge the stereotypical romantic comedy, they are usually light-hearted with a obvious humour and the majority of them have a predictable storyline, but most indie films challenge them by using a dark humour or unique plot.

The basic plot of a romantic comedy is that two protagonists, usually a man and a woman, meet, part ways due to an argument or other obstacle, then ultimately reunite. Sometimes the two protagonists meet and become involved initially, then must confront challenges to their union. When Harry Met Sally's plot is not this simple, the film follows their relationship, and how their relationship changes throughout their knowing of each other: They meet and don't like each other,5 years later meet and part on even less friendly terms, meet again 5 years after that becoming friends, after an unexpected night of sex creating tension, weeks later the two argue, harry attempts to mend the relationship, later that year, the two realise their love for each other, and end scene shows them being interview after getting married.

While the two protagonists are separated, one or both of them usually realizes that they are ideal for each other. After, one of the two makes an effort to find the other person or due to an astonishing coincidental encounter, the two meet again, and one usually declares their love for the other. The Break-Up is an examples of a romantic comedy that inverts peoples expectations of the usual plot, where the protagnists after separating, get back together. However in The Break-Up, when the couple reunite, they remain separated, but leave on good terms.

The couple does not, however, have to marry, or live together "happily ever after". The ending of a romantic comedy is meant to affirm the primary importance of the love relationship in its protagonists' lives, even if they physically separate in the end.

Hitch Trailer

Will Smith and Eva Mendez star in this smart romantic comedy. Smith plays a professional matchmaker, who teaches men how to woo women.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days trailer

A clever narrative for this hilarious romantic comedy. Kate Hudson plays a girl trying to ruin and end a relationship within 10 days, while Matthew McConaughey plays a guy trying to get a girl to fall in love with him.

Bridget Jones's Diary Trailer

Another iconic romantic comedy of which others are benchmarked. Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth stuck in a love triangle in this British rom com.

Research

Research part three, I decided to look at some of the best romantic comedies of 2000s:

Bridget Jones' Diary (2001)

How To Loose A Guy In Ten Days (2003)

Hitch (2005)

10 Things I Hate About You Trailer

In a loose adoption of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, Health Ledger and Julia Stiles star in this different 90s rom com.

When Harry Met Sally

In my completely bias opinion, one of the best romantic comedies of all time. Rom Com extraordinaire Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal star in this iconic film.

Pretty In Pink Trailer

*Brat Pack Molly Ringwald starred in yet another John Hughes teenage rom-com drama with Andrew McCarthy.

Research

Part two of my research into romantic comedies, where romantic comedies really took off, this time looking at three very popular and iconic rom-coms:

Pretty in Pink (1986)

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Breakfast at Tiffany's trailer

Possibly one of Audrey Hepburn's finest films. Hepburn stars along side George Peppard, in an original rom-com.

Roman Holiday Trailer

Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck romantic comedy, where Hepburn won an Oscar for Best Actress

Bringing up Baby Trailer

Screwball romantic comedy starring two of the best actors of that time, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Research

Part one of my research into romantic comedies started with watching a collection of old 'rom-coms':

Bringing up Baby (1938)

Roman Holiday (1953)

Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
